Developing a Climate Change Bird Conservation Plan for California

March 19– 20, 2008

Volunteer Canyon of Audubon Canyon Ranch
4800 Hwy 1, Stinson Beach CA

Desert Cloud

The goal of the upcoming spring California Partners in Flight workshop will be to lay the foundation for creating a new bird conservation plan that will address climate change in California. Climate change is happening, though our current CalPIF habitat-based Bird Conservation Plans (BCPs) do not take climate change into account. We need to start planning now if we are to fulfill the CalPIF mission of conserving birds and their habitats throughout California.

Click here for a draft schedule of the workshop.

Click here for driving instructions to Volunteer Canyon.

The goals of the workshop will be to:

  • Describe the current state of knowledge of climate change in California
  • Describe the current and future threats facing California’s habitats and bird populations due to climate change.
  • Identify information gaps in the above points.
  • Discuss management adaptation strategies to address the effects of climate change on California’s habitats and bird populations.
  • Review a suite of bird species to use as CalPIF climate change focal species.
  • Gather information that will form the foundation for writing the Climate Change Bird Conservation Plan for California.
  • Set benchmarks and timeline goals for developing the plan.

Registration is free, though there may be a requested donation to cover food costs.

Seating is limited to 30 participants, so reserve a space now! To reserve a space, simply email Ryan DiGaudio (rdigaudio@prbo.org) with the subject header "CalPIF Climate Change meeting", and be sure to include your name and agency or organization affiliation in the email.

Lodging: There are rustic (summer camp-like) bunkhouse accommodations at the meeting location in Volunteer Canyon that will be free of charge to meeting participants on the night of March 19th. The bunkhouse has cots and mattresses, though you will need to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and towel. There may also be space in one of the bedrooms inside the farmhouse where the meeting will be held.

Alternatively, there are a number of small inns in nearby Stinson Beach. Click here for a listing of Stinson Beach hotels and inns.

Updates on the meeting will be posted on this page.
