What is a Bird-A-Thon?
If you've never heard of a Bird-A-Thon before, think of it as a spell-a-thon where you count birds instead of words.
Each year Bird-A-Thon participants or "counters" choose any 24-hour period from September 1 through October 15 to go birding, and identify as many bird species as possible.
To raise funds for PRBO’s award-winning conservation science and education programs, counters ask friends, family, colleagues, and businesses to pledge a certain amount per species, or to make a flat donation to their Bird-A-Thon.
Donations to Bird-A-Thon help PRBO reduce the negative impacts of environmental and land use change on birds and the ecosystems upon which they depend.
It may seem a quirky way to raise funds, but during the past 34 years Bird-A-Thon has raised over $2.5 million to protect birds and their habitats.

How can I donate to a Bird-A-Thon?
You and/or your business can make a tax deductable donation to PRBO's Bird-A-Thon in support of an individual participant, an entire team, or even a PRBO project that is near and dear to your heart.

There are several ways to donate to a Bird-A-Thon counter or team:
- Contact the Bird-A-Thon counter directly.
- Click on the "Donate or Join" button of www.prbo.org and indicate that you are making a Bird-A-Thon donation.
- Visit PRBO's FirstGiving fundraising page at http://www.firstgiving.com/prbo and search for the counter or team by name under the 'fundraisers' or 'teams' tab. (Note: not all counters have online fundraising pages).
- Write a check payable to PRBO, include the counter or team name and 'BAT 12' in the memo, and mail the check to PRBO Conservation Science, 3820 Cypress Drive #11, Petaluma, CA 94954.
- Contact Eve Williams at 707-781-2555, ext. 356 to donate with a credit card by phone.
