PRBO Conservation Science offers SEA Alcatraz, a classroom and field seabird education program for 4th and 5th grade students in San Francisco offered February through June.
Students explore and study the seabirds of Alcatraz Island, raise their awareness of local habitats and help to conserve them by creating amazing outreach posters.
This program addresses several Science Content Standards for California Public Schools.
SEA Alcatraz Goals
- Raise student awareness of local seabird ecology
- Raise student awareness of challenges seabirds on Alcatraz face when living in an urban environment
- Present future career options in wildlife science
- Reduce disturbance to nesting seabirds on Alcatraz Island

Fieldtrip options include
- A seabird pellet dissection and outdoor foraging study co-led by Farallon Marine Sanctuary Association staff
- A trip to Alcatraz Island to observe and study nesting seabird colonies with PRBO seabird biologists, educators and partners

Student-created Outreach Posters
Students take action to conserve seabirds! They design and create outreach posters incorporating what they learn in the SEA Alcatraz program. Posters are distributed to the local community to spread the word about reducing disturbance to seabirds on Alcatraz and raising awareness about the value of our local marine environment.

Contact Information
Classroom visits and fieldtrips can be scheduled between February and June. This program is flexible to teachers’ needs and preferences. SEA Alcatraz is provided under grant funding, but classes will need to provide transportation to fieldtrip sites. The ferry fee to Alcatraz is included in the program.
