PRBO uses riparian (streamside) birds as a tool to help guide and evaluate restoration efforts along the Sacramento River.

By partnering with those who own and manage land we can provide recommendations to enhance habitat for birds and other wildlife species.

Our work in this important region over the last 15 years has resulted in numerous publications and restoration guidelines.

Study Objectives:
  • Determine what riparian songbirds need to reproduce and survive in riparian habitats of the Sacramento River.
  • Assess how successful re-vegetation and restoration efforts are at creating habitat for threatened and sensitive bird populations.
  • Inventory all habitat types (including agricultural and other highly managed areas) to determine the status of landbird populations in these areas.
  • Determine how management practices and agricultural spraying affect health bird populations.
  • Asses status of the numerous sensitive species associated with riparian zones.
  • Monitor the passage of fall migrants throughout the refuge.
