PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This digital atlas is an integral portion of the report "Inland-breeding seabirds in California: A catalogue with conservation recommendations" (see the citation for the atlas and the report provided below). Both the report and the interactive atlas maps found here are also available on the PRBO website. The overall project was designed to document the current status and highlight the conservation needs in California of a group of seven species of colonial or semicolonial waterbirds, which for lack of a better term are here considered inland-breeding seabirds. These species are the American White Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, Ring-billed Gull, California Gull, Caspian Tern, Forster's Tern, and Black Tern. Although the majority of survey work was conducted from 1997 to 1999, the atlas maps show the locations of colonies of the two species of gulls active from 1994 to 2000 and those of the other five species active from 1997 to 2000. The atlas maps do not show the location of the many colonies known to be active either prior to or since these periods. The methods of surveys, species accounts, historical data on colonies, and conservation recommendations are included in the full report. Before using the maps, at a minimum please read the material in the Mapping Approach section for an explanation of the approach and constraints to mapping.

Colony sites were mapped on 1:100,000 scale USGS topographic quads. Interactive maps were created for three general regions within California - Northern, Central, and Southern (see map) - using the HTML ImageMapper 3.0 extension for ArcView 3.x. To access the interactive map for each region, click on the appropriate link to the left and then on the "Navigation Instructions" link in the top left corner of the map page, which describes how to zoom in on a colony site and to retrieve information about that colony.

Species Tables include data on numbers of each species by colony or region during the survey period. Species Range Maps show the statewide distribution and relative abundance of inland colonies. Acknowledgments contains a list of contributors and funders.
